Trézor.io/Start® — Starting Up Your Device

A friendly, step-by-step introduction to safely initialize and secure your Trézor device.

Welcome — what to expect

Starting up your Trézor device is an intentional, secure process designed to protect your crypto from the very first moment. Over the next few minutes you'll power the device, create a new wallet or restore an existing one, and learn best practices for keeping your recovery phrase and device safe. This guide is platform-agnostic and works whether you're using Windows, macOS, Linux, or a mobile companion app.

Tip: Always get your device from an official reseller or directly from Trézor to avoid tampered hardware. Treat your recovery phrase like the keys to a vault — never share it, never photograph it, and never store it online.

Step 1 — Unbox & Inspect

Open the box and examine the tamper-proof seal. The package should include the Trézor device, a USB cable, recovery sheets, and an instruction leaflet. Inspect packaging for unusual tapes, scratches, or signs of pre-use. If anything looks off, stop and contact Trézor support.

Step 2 — Power & Connect

Connect your Trézor to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The device will power on and display a short welcome screen. On your desktop, open Trézor Suite or the recommended web setup at Trézor.io/start. Follow the on-screen prompts. During setup the device and the application will verify each other using a secure handshake — this ensures you are talking to your device and not a malicious intermediary.

Step 3 — Initialize (Create or Recover)

You will be offered two primary choices: Create a new wallet or Recover an existing wallet. Choose Create to generate a brand new cryptographic seed on the device. The Trézor generates randomness and stores seed material only inside the device — it never leaves the hardware.

  • Create new wallet: The device will display a recovery phrase — write it down on the physical recovery card. Confirm the words as prompted.
  • Restore wallet: Enter your existing recovery phrase using the device screen. Double-check each word and the order.

Step 4 — PIN & Security

Next you'll set a PIN. Choose a PIN that is long, memorable to you, but not easily guessable. The PIN protects the device if someone gains physical access. Trézor displays randomised numbers on-screen for PIN entry, preventing fingerprint smudges or camera-based attacks from revealing your PIN input pattern.

Step 5 — Back up your Recovery Phrase

This is the most important step. The recovery phrase (typically 12, 18, or 24 words depending on your device settings) is the only way to restore access to your funds if the device is lost or damaged. Write the words exactly as shown, in order, on the provided recovery card or on secure metal backup options sold separately. Store the written backup in a safe location — ideally a fireproof, waterproof safe or bank deposit box.

Best Practices & Do's and Don'ts

  • Do store multiple backups in separate secure locations.
  • Do enable passphrase support if you want an extra layer of deterministically derived security (advanced users).
  • Don't enter your recovery phrase on a computer or phone — only on the device itself during restore.
  • Don't photograph or type your recovery phrase into cloud storage or messages.

When Setup Finishes

Once setup completes, Trézor Suite will show your wallet dashboard. You'll be able to receive and send coins, review transaction history, and connect to supported third-party apps. Always verify transaction details on the physical Trézor screen before approving — never rely solely on your computer display.

Security reminder: firmware updates are essential. Keep your device firmware and the Trézor Suite app up to date. Firmware updates are signed and validated by Trézor; follow official instructions only.

FAQ

Q: Can I set up Trézor offline?
A: The device generates seed material internally and does not require internet to create the recovery phrase. You can perform the core initialization offline if you prefer, but the Suite app will need network access for certain features like fetching balances.

Q: What if I lose my recovery phrase?
A: If you lose the recovery phrase and your device is lost or damaged, you will not be able to recover your funds. Always keep backups and consider using multiple secure locations.

Q: How do I verify firmware updates?
A: Use the official Trézor Suite or Trézor.io resources to check for updates. The device will prompt and verify any official update before installation.
